Birthday: January 18, 966
Current Location: Orqua
House: Lennox
Player Base: Richard Gere
Appearance:
Devin stands about 5'11 and is in excellent shape. His hair is a dark brown and is kind of wavy and long. He doesn’t really ever like to cut his hair and so it reaches his shoulders, though he never allows it to grow longer then that. His eyes are a dark brown and always seem to reflect a cheerful happy go lucky nature. Devin usually sports a tan, even in the winter, simply because he can generally be found outside.
Devin doesn’t really care to wear the clothes that would reflect his station in life. He generally wears whatever would be most comfortable for him while he is wandering around outside. However, whenever he is in court or in the presence of some other lord or lady, Devin reluctantly dresses in a style more befitting the upper class.
Devin doesn’t like jewelry and tends to avoid it, except for his own personal ring with the crest of Lennox on it. He is never without this as it identifies him as the Lord of Svavel.
Personality:Devin is a very cheerful person that is hardly ever depressed. He is one of those people that really could care less what his station in life is. He enjoys the privileges of being an upper class man, however he also enjoys traveling without any of the comforts of home.
Devin generally makes friends with anyone he meets and rarely ever quarrels. On the occasion that he does quarrel with someone, it is merely a friendly little spat.
Devin doesn't really believe in fighting, believing that a person should use their minds more then their strength. However, that doesn't mean that he can't hold his own in a fight.
Devin has been well schooled in sword fighting. He also has the art of throwing a dagger at the smallest of targets perfected as well. Another of Devin's talents is being a perfect aim with a bow and arrow. It doesn't take him very long to pull off any variety of difficult shots. He is also very good at horseback riding.
Devin is a very intelligent man. He is a whiz at reading and writing ... and often can be found writing poetry and songs. He doesn't mind interacting with the peasants he rules over. He can often be found riding throughout the villages and farmlands overseeing things to make certain everything is going the way they should be.
He always makes a point of making certain that the people he rules over know that they can come to him with any kind of problem they have. He always does his best to solve it in whatever way he can. He also always makes a point of ruling fairly, even when it comes to turning down someone's request.
Devin is also a very good judge of people. He's hardly ever wrong when it comes to judging someone's character, or their true intentions.
Devin is a very loyal husband. He remains faithful to his wife. He would never hurt her by having an affair with someone else. She satisfies him more then enough, both in heart and body, even now that they’ve been married for more then twenty years.
History:Devin Lennox was born in 966 to Baird and Camellia Lennox. House Lennox was just a banner house in the city of Mienna under Lord Sterlyn at this time, but they were an extremely loyal house. It was in this year that House Sterlyn and House Castell declared war on House Lorterra. While Devin was still just a babe in the arms of his mother, Baird Lennox and his men went to Merquis Sterlyn’s side and joined in the battle.
Mienna was one of the closest cities on the border between Gyllene and Svavel. They were so physically close to House Lorterra’s stronghold that Baird knew he would be taking a big risk to choose sides so definitely and so early in the war. He knew that his people’s fields would probably be burned and their livestock killed. His people would be raped, murdered, and pillaged because of his decision. However, he was loyal to Merquis Sterlyn and so he went to battle regardless of the risks.
During the next three years, Devin didn’t see anything of his father. His mother told him constantly about how brave a man his father was. She even read to him bits and pieces of the letters that his father sent back while he was away. However, as he was a toddler at the time, Devin didn’t really understand much of anything he was being told.
In the Year 969, the war finally came to an end with House Sterlyn and House Castell as the victors. Merquis Sterlyn was named the new king. After Sterlyn had moved the capital of Forsilvra to his own home city in Solbra, as well as expanding and renovating Castle Argent he proceeded to reward Baird Lennox for his absolute loyalty and his military support in the form of much-needed knights and trained swordsmen.
Baird Lennox was given the title of Lord of Svavel and granted all controlling rights to the province of Svavel and the city of Orqua by House Sterlyn, the new monarchy of Forsilvra. As House Sterlyn's word was now law, whoever was left from House Lorterra was given leave to find a new place to live, since Baird Lennox didn't want to leave a back door open in his household, so to speak. Baird brought in all his own people and started the ruling of Orqua fresh.
This was also the year that Baird Lennox arranged a marriage between Devin and Adeline Winter, the youngest of Erlend and Jocelyn Winter’s four children. It was a distinguished marriage, one that was intended to form an alliance between House Lennox and House Winter. However, Devin was too young to understand any of this at the time.. Although his parents mentioned the fact to him all his life, Devin didn’t really pay much attention to it until he was old enough to understand that his life had been decided for him before he was even allowed out of the nursery alone. He only met his future wife a few times as a child, the distance between the two cities was great and so they only met each other during court events. She was a nice enough girl, but Devin didn’t particularly pay her more attention then he was forced to.
A year later, his mother discovered she was pregnant. Baird and Camellia were delighted. However, it soon became apparent that this pregnancy wasn’t going to be as easy as Devin’s birth was. Camellia was weak and couldn’t even summon up the strength to get out of bed. During the actual birthing, Camellia lost too much blood and died. Although her second son, William Lennox survived the birth he was wasn’t as healthy as his older brother had been.
Even at the age of four, Devin had been looking forward to being a big brother. His mother had told him that it was fun having a younger sibling and that it would be his responsibility to look after him or her. He was proud that he was going to be a big brother. However, things didn’t turn out like they were suppose to. Instead of adding to his family, this small life took away his mother. Devin didn’t understand that sometimes these things happened. As far as he was concerned he would rather have had his mother instead of this small little baby brother that could only cry.
His father was far too grief stricken to try and comfort the little boy. In fact, Baird refused to spend any time with either child for the next couple of years. The boys reminded him too much of his wife and he couldn’t bare the sight of them. This only added to the resentment that Devin felt for William. It seemed to him that William had taken away not only his mother, but his father as well.
Devin never got the opportunity to stop feeling resentful of William. Two years later both boys came down with a sickness. They both had trouble breathing and were running high fevers. Devin recovered, however William had never been very strong to begin with and so he succumbed to the sickness and died.
When Devin turned eight years old, his father remarried for the sake of being able to have more children. There was always the possibility of a child dying and he wanted to make certain that he had enough potential heirs. Evelin Barton was the woman he married and Devin and her both took an instant dislike to one another. Devin disliked Evelin because she was supposedly taking his beloved mother’s place. He didn’t want another mother, he wanted his own mother back. Evelin disliked Devin because he was a constant reminder that she hadn’t been Baird’s first choice. There was also the fact that Devin was the heir to the house and more then likely whatever children she did give Baird during their marriage would always be second place in the household.
This was also the year that his father begin to take more of an interest in Devin again. He began to teach him everything he knew about how to successfully take care of a province. Baird allowed Devin to go with him where ever he was going, provided of course it would be safe for a child. Devin learned all about being a lord of a province by watching his father. His father also taught him how to ride and hunt. Devin was also given the best tutors that Svavel had to offer. Reading and writing became something that Devin really loved.
A year later, when Devin was nine years old, his first half brother was born. Devin hated him even more then he had hated William. This boy not only stole some of his father’s attention away from him, but he wasn’t even a true brother. He was the child of his stepmother, the woman who had taken his mother’s place. However, knowing that being mean to this younger brother of his would only get him into trouble Devin took care to try not to take out his resentment on the boy too terribly much.
When Devin was eleven years old, Evelin gave birth to another boy named Darek. At first Devin resented this boy as well. However, as Darek grew older it became apparent that he idolized his older half brother. It wasn’t long before Devin began to get a soft spot in his heart for this youngest of his half brothers.
As Devin grew old enough to understand what being betrothed to someone really meant, he resented the fact. Why should he marry someone he had rarely met? There were other girls that lived near him that he was interested in. However, because of something his parents had arranged when he was only 3 years old he couldn’t get serious with any of them. That’s not to say he couldn’t and didn’t charm his way under the dresses of a few of the women servants in his household the moment he became old enough to really care about women. His father’s only rule was that he had to be discreet and he had to make certain that the women he was with understood that it wasn’t possible to make a future with them. His father also insisted that he stayed away from any noble lady, for fear of creating a scandal that would reach the ears of House Winter and sever the arrangement that had been made.
By the time Devin was 20 years old he still resented the fact that he was betrothed to someone he barely knew. However, he was a good son and had resigned himself to the fact, though he figured he would never truly be able to love his wife. His resentment lasted until Adeline came to Orqua in the months before the wedding.
At 18 she was lovely girl and Devin fell hard for her. He could see that she was sad and worried about something, perhaps even homesick. Devin took it upon himself to cheer his soon to be bride up. He courted her during those months, doing his best to charm Adeline with his poetry and company until finally he wore away at her resolve and she opened up to him. They began to trust one another during those months, thoughts of the resentment he had once held a long distant memory. They began their relationship stronger then many noble arranged marriages do. During his life with Adeline, Devin began to love her as much as his own father had loved his mother.
The year after Devin and Adeline married, Baird Lennox died in a riding accident. He had been out riding alone when his horse spooked and threw him to the ground. Baird fell and struck his head against a rock and died. When the horse returned without his father, Devin took some of his men and searched the forest. They found the former Lord of Lennox laying dead where he had fallen. Though he grieved his father’s passing, Devin became the Lord of House Lennox on that day. A year later, his stepmother died in her sleep.
Four years later, Adeline gave birth to a beautiful little girl which they named Odelia. From the first time that Devin laid eyes on Odelia, she had him wrapped around her little finger. It didn’t matter to him that she wasn’t a son. He loved her and couldn’t resist spoiling her with everything she could possibly want. Two years later, his son Garrick Lennox was born.
Although Devin doesn’t spoil Garrick as much as he spoils his sister, Devin loves the boy just as much. Two years after Garrick was born Adeline got pregnant again. However, this time she suffered through a miscarriage and was never able to conceive again. This saddened Devin a lot because he loves being a father, however he was blessed with two beautiful children already and so he was happy.
Devin loves both his children very much. He spends as much time with them as he can. He also loves his wife more then anything. His family is his most important treasure and he tries to do his best by them.
Seven years after the miscarriage, another tragedy struck the Lennox House. Darek Lennox was found murdered. He had apparently been fighting someone and had been killed at knife point. The murderer was never found.
Writing Sample:Devin adjusted his son’s grip on the bow before stepping back and saying, “Take the shot Garrick. Just aim carefully and let her go.”
The eager boy carefully aimed his arrow at the target across the field before releasing it confidently. Garrick watched the arrow fly expecting it to land in the very center of the bull’s-eye as his father’s arrow had done. However, when it finally thudded into the target it barely made it, landing instead right at the edge. Garrick frowned in disappointment before looking up at his father, the beginnings of a sulk showing clearly on his face. “I aimed papa. I know I did. It was suppose to go right to the center just like yours. What happened?”
Devin sighted another arrow and let it loose, watching it thud in the center of the target once again. Turning his gaze back to his son he said, “It’s not just about aiming son. Remember you have to take in to account the wind and the angle of your shot. Don’t worry, all it takes is practice. You’ll get it eventually, just don’t give up.”
Garrick nodded eagerly, taking his father’s advice to heart. All he wanted was to be just like his father. If his father told him that he would eventually get it if he practiced, then Garrick believed him. Once again the boy adjusted his grip on the bow like his father had shown him and attempted to line up his shot. When he thought he had it right, Garrick let the arrow go. The arrow flew toward the target and while it didn’t hit the center it did get closer. He grinned up at his father and exclaimed, “I got closer papa!”
Devin ruffled the boy’s hair and murmured proudly, “I see that. I told you practice would help. Keep at it and you’ll be a better shot then I am before you know it. Now, we better head back home or mama is going to be mad at us.”
He helped Garrick mount his pony before mounting his own horse. Devin then lead the way back home.
